What to expect from nationwide civil defence mock drills

The Ministry of Home Affairs issued the directive for mock drills just days after urging states to strengthen their civil defence mechanisms. The earlier instructions included assessing the effectiveness of air siren systems across the country.

Additionally, states have been asked to expedite the establishment and fine-tuning of radio communication links with the Indian Air Force and ensure the operational readiness of both primary and shadow control rooms. The MHA also directed states and union territories to prepare for potential scenarios such as a complete blackout. A similar drill was conducted in the Ferozepur cantonment area of Punjab on Sunday.

Authorities have been encouraged to provide training to civilians and students on self-protection measures in the event of a hostile attack and to promote active public participation in these drills. Overall, the states and union territories have been instructed to assess the effectiveness of their civil defence establishments based on nine key parameters outlined by the MHA.
