About Self Defense Classes // Asena Melike Agansoy

In this video we created for Patreon you can find information about my community classes @hopealkazar supported by Nike. As being the first female black belt of my country my aim is to use Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a tool to empower women, create social impact and go beyond false descriptions.

Despite the pandemic conditions I started giving free self defense classes after witnessing endless news on violence that’s been used to oppress women more and more everyday & government’s systematic approach towards making femicide legitimate. After our first class on July 2020 the movement met with great interest by women and became a platform for physical resistance.

Self Defense classes not only gave women the courage to stand up for themselves and skills they need to hold their space but also introduced them to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and its philosophy, a new tool that they can use to make more strategic decisions in life for personal development & growth.

Contrary to patriarchal mindset and rather than focusing on how your body looks this program is focused on how you can use your body more efficiently and what you can do with it inside the context of body, movement and action triangle.
